Booby Traps

Booby traps are an essential weapon of guerilla warfare. Using very primitive and inexpensive tools a guerilla warfare proponent can have at his fingertips a lethal arsenal.

Such traps use a few very simple principles of mechanics to compose an array of devices which when working together create a deadly scenario for anyone unlucky enough to 'fall into the trap'. A mechanical engineering graduate would probably be very comfortable with the elements of gravity and friction which along with fire create some of the simple components of such devices.

In preparation of our hypothetical array of devices a little preparation is required; first a special hanger screw is required which is actually a screw with a ring for a head, rope and string can be passed through the ring to create our booby trap. Petrol is required to feed the fire and strong string will also be useful. Very importantly a match pull striker device should be created as the 'detonator' for the devices to be discussed.

The match pull striker is created using the components of plastic adhesive tape similar to that used on electrical wiring and a match-book. The matches are removed from the match-book and curled into a cylinder while the striker is also turned into a hollow cylinder in the middle of which the matches are positioned. The assembly is held by tape with provision for a loop at either end for the string. Therefore when the matches are pulled appart from the striker the matches ignite. Each one of these two parts has a loop attached to it which can be used to hold on to the device or pull it appart with string/rope.

Door Trap
A favourite, the door trap is constructed in this way; a hanger screw is put into the frame above the door and a string is nailed to the inside of the door at opening side then put through the hook/hanger, this string is then passed through another hook/hanger in the ceiling. The string is then connected to a match/striker device the other end of which is connected to a gallon of petrol just balanced on the edge of a table. When the door is opened the match/striker device is actuated and the matches now on fire with the open plastic gallon of petrol fall off the table to create a pool of liquid fire.

Time delay trap
A similar booby trap can be constructed to work on a destructive time delay. One one side of a table a brick is balanced to fall and tied with string through a hanger/hook in the ceiling. The string is tied to a match/striker combo and then to a plastic petrol/gallon container also balanced to fall on the other side of the table. Now if a small hole is drilled in the base of the plastic gallon towards the side of the floor the petrol will start pouring out. When the gallon is partially emptied the brick on the other side will fall to the floor seperating and lighting the match/striker igniter which falls with the rest of the petrol on the floor creating fire.
