More About CodeineCodeine is one of the substances present in Opium. Opium has a long history associated with the Opium Poppy flower. As far back as unrecorded history medical men used ground poppy flowers such as the Papaver Somniferum as a treatment for pain. The pod would be ground and turned into an unpleasant to drink tea. In modern history after technology was developed to extract pure opium from the plant, opium injection would be used as a pain and anxiety relief agent. Opium has been made a controlled substance in the western world after a series of scandals in modern history where Chinamen came to ill repute as using the substance to seduce western ladies in orgies and brothels. Driven by the racist views of the time and further pressure by the medical industry it was calssified as a controlled substance and the opium poppy received such a bad reputation that laws were issued to prevent its cultivation by the public. Codeine and Morphine are extracted from raw Opium. Both act on the human body by eventually converting to Morphine in the brain, which is the 'feel good' chemical that fights the sensation of pain in the body. Although both are controlled substances, Codeine is easier to acquire and a lot more practical to use. Codeine, when ingested in pill form, converts to the brain through the gastrointestinal tract avoiding the liver entirely. Therefore the majority of the dose is converted to the brain rather than being destroyed in the liver such as is the case with Morphine. Its ability to avoid the liver entirely gives it its primary advantage since the alternative Morphine has the ability to damage the liver when taken by mouth. An additional advantage is that although Codeine is somewhat addictive it is a lot less addictive than the other opiates. Highly frequent use of Codeine in higher doses can result in tolerance being built up to the medication. When this happens a larger dose is needed to experience the same pain relief effect. This can be avoided by taking Codeine with other specific pain relief agents such as Tylenol, Panadol, Ibuprofen and Aspirin. When combined together they are twice as effective in fighting pain than Codeine on its own. Codeine medication can be found prepackaged in such compound form, as Tylenol #1,#2,#3, (Tylenol with Codeine), Panadeine (Panadol with Codeine), Codifen (Ibuprofen with Codeine) but patients have been known to take Codeine pills along with the supplementary pain relief agents listed above as long as the doses are kept in moderation. It can be used for general pain relief when taken with Panadol or Tylenol. Its combination with Aspirin is used to relieve headaches and Ibuprofen is chosen over Panadol and Tylenol due to its capacity to upset the stomach less than the former. Further to that a third substance Caffeine is added to further enhance the pain relief properties of Codeine especially when treating severe headaches, though this is kept to a low dose as Caffeine can be harmful in higher doses. Typical doses of Codeine in these compositions can vary from 10,30 and even 60 mg with the dosage of Tylenol and Panadol varying from 300 mg and above.
