The Luger Handgun

luger 9mm gun

This is the now very well known Luger 9mm was used by the Germans especially during World War 2. The P08 model shown above was issued to officers over soldiers due to it being higher priced. Soldiers where issued the Luger P38 (not pictured here) which was produced in bulk at less expense to feed the demands of the german army.

The Luger pistol -basically a Borchardt modified and improved by Luger appeared at the end of the 19th century. It was manufactured by the Deutsche Waffen und Munitions fabrik [DWM) of Berlin. The pistol illustrated went into production in 1908 and was almost immediately adopted by the German Army, which was seeking a self-loader to replace its revolver. This assured the arm's success, as many smaller countries followed Germany's lead and purchased large numbers of Lugers for their armed forces. It served the Germans well during World War I and, like the Mauser, became something of a household word, establishing a popular reputation which is, perhaps, greater than its real merit. After World War I, its
manufacture was taken over by Mauser, who continued to make both military and civilian models. This particular exam pie is one of those made by Mauserand is dated "1940". In 1938 the German Army adopted the Walther P38, but Lugers were in production until 1943.
