The Walther PPK

Remembered as the gun of choice for the secret agent created by Ian Fleming, James Bond 007, the walther PPK appeared in the majority of his movies, funnily enough in the movie Dr. No. 007's superiors thought he should have a more powerful handgun relinquishing him of the PPK.

The famous German firm known as the Carl Walther Waffenfabrik was established in 1886, but it did not begin to make self-loading pistols until 1908. Its first nine models were numbered, but in 1929 it produced a tenth model designed specifically for police work, and this was designated the Polizei Pistole or "PP". This weapon [an example is illustrated on the top of the page was immediately popular, and two years later a smaller version was made forconcealed use. It was intended for plain-clothes police work and was known as the"PPK": the"K", it was said, stood for Kriminal itself short for Kriminal Polizei, the name of the German detective branch.

The Walther PPK pistol, is of blowback type and it has several interesting and important features. The most notable, perhaps, is that it is provided with an external hammer activated by a double action lock; this allows the pistol to be carried safely with a round in the chamber and the hammer down. Thus, all that is necessary to bring it into action is to push off the safety catch and press the trigger. It also has an indicator pin which protrudes through the top of the slide when there is a cartridge in the chamber —a very useful feature in any self-loading pistol, where the rounds cannot be seen as they can in a revolver. The earliest versions of this pistol had complete butt-frames with a pair of grips, but later examples had a front strap only, with a one-piece, moulded, wrap-round, plastic grip. Mostalso had a plastic extension on the bottom of the magazine, to increase the area of grip.
