Homemade Shotgun

The following device is very dangerous to use. The following is provided for information purposes only !!

A 12 Gauge shotgun can be built out of 3/4 inch steel pipe and fittings. The following materials are required; a wood 2x4x32 inches. A 3/4 inch steel pipe 20 to 30 inches long threaded on one end. A 3/4 inch coupling and a 3/4 inch solid plug. Metal strap of size 1/4 x 1/16 x 4 inches. About 100 yards of heavy twine. 3 wood screws and a flat head nail of size 6D or 8D. Drill, screwdriver, saw and file. Shellac or lacqueur and elastic bands.

Carefully inspect the steel pipe (the shotgun barrel). It should be free of defects or cracks otherwise it will explode when used. A 12 gauge shotgun shell should fit neatly into the barrel upto and not including the brass rim of the shell. The outside diameter of the pipe should be at least 1 inch.

Saw the wood in the following way. 32 inches length, 4 inches high on one side and 2 inches on the other. Then cut a notch 1 inch high 13 and a half inches long at the rear of the shotgun stock near the 4 inch high side. At the top of the uncut part of the stock saw a V groove 3/8 inches high into the top side of the wood.

Turn the coupling into the pipe till tight. Coat both the pipe and the V groove in the shotgun stock with shellac/lacqueur and while still wet put the pipe on the groove with the coupling against the back side of the groove in the shotgun stock, Wrap with two layers of twine coating with shellac after each layer.

Drill a hole in the center of the plug (exactly in the center) large enough for the nail to pass through. File the threaded end of the plug flat. cut off the nail after 1/32 inch past the plug. Screw the plug into the coupling.

Bend the 4 inch metal strap into an L shape with the short side 1 1/2 inches. Drill a hole for the wood screw at the far end of the long side and file a notch 1/2 inch from the bend on the long side. This is the firing hammer.

Attach the hammer to the stock with a wood screw so that when it pivots it hits the firing pin, the flat head of the nail. Place a screw on each side of the stock about 4 inches in front of the hammer and attach an elastic band to the screws and then to the notch in the L shaped strap so that the elastic pulls the hammer towards the pin.

Test fire the shotgun 6x before actually using it. Do this by standing 10 feet behind a barrier away from the shotgun placed on a rest. Tie a string to the hammer and pull and release to fire.

To use, unscrew the plug and put in a 12 gauge shotgun shell. screw in the plug hand tight, pull back the hammer and let go to fire. If it does not fire shorten the elastic band. Remove the shell by unscrewing the plug and shaking the shell loose.
