Nuclear Bomb Plans

A chemical element such as Uranium or Plutonium is composed of very tiny particles called atoms. Each atom could be visualised as a nucleus surrounded by a cloud of negatively charged electrons. The nucleus itself is composed of positively charged protons and neutral Neutrons. The coined term of Nuclear Weapon is derived out of 'Nucleus'. A Nuclear weapon works by sustaining a chain reaction which releases a lot of energy, how does this work ?

A radioactive element such as PLutonium constantly releases neutrons. The idea is that if a neutron hits another Plutonium atom that atom will break down releasing more neutrons that will do the same to other atomic particles. The trick here is to bring the Plutonium particles so close to each other that this radiation results in a chain reaction causing the 'fission' , the breaking appart of an atom once it is bombarded by neutrons. When an atom does break down this way part of it is converted into a large energy or heat as we call it. Because this is a chain reaction the quantity of energy being released increases dramatically in a split second to very high levels of energy that are capable of extreme destruction.

However the principle of a nuclear bomb or atomic bomb is not that simple; When the chain reaction starts there's naturally an explosion and this explosion breaks appart the nuclear material resulting in only a small quantity of energy being released. The trick is to keep the nuclear material confined in a tiny area so that the quantity of energy being given off increases very quickly until it cannot be contained anymore with a huge explosion.

To contain the nuclear core in one place long enough for it to achieve a huge chain reaction an explosive lense device is used which concentrates the power of conventional explosives to contain the nuclear core. Early experiments to do this used a steel pipe with two sections of nuclear material at each end. And explosion in the pipe with conventional explosives would push one of the sections into the other long enough for it to achieve a self sustaining chain reaction. Modern nuclear weapons use a more advanced version of this in the form of a sphere instead of a steel pipe.

There is an alternative to conventional nuclear weapons which is the dirty bomb. This is a very simple idea based on the use of an explosive to scatter a lot of radioactive powder all over the place which is highly contaminating to any biological targets. This is not actually a nuclear weapon but is in fact a lot simpler to build.
