Little did a British tinkerer realize in 1640, when he fashioned the first telescopic musket sight, what havoc he had wrought. For many years, his inven-
tion seemed merely a curiosity.

But after three centuries of evolution and refinement, and when placed atop a quality rifle, a sniper employing this optical device today can inflict selective, intentional hits against a quarry so far away that the unfortunate victim's comrades have difficulty even hearing the rifle's blast.

Throughout his history, the sniper has had a special mystique, a subject both feared and respected by those who pass before his crosshairs. Partly, he is a psychological weapon, for every man shivers at the thought of being taken by an invisible, distant foe who reaps this grim harvest coolly, selectively, and unerringly.

On a more practical level, snipers inflict far greater losses among those unlucky enough to appear in their crosshairs than have their targets been able to incur among snipers. This is probably the most cost effective fighting system in existence, averaging one kill for every 1.7 rounds expended. Compare that to a cruise missile or Stealth fighter strike!

And that is the most interesting thing about modernm snipers—so fundamental and ancient a fighting technique remains relevant in our era of computer-guided smart bombs. Indeed it has only been in the past decade that American snipers both police and military have reached the zenith in their development.

A lot of special subjects are covered in sniper training not found anywhere else, such as how to escape a pursuing enemy force, .50-caliber long-range sniping, shooting through glass, employing a suppressed sniper rifle, mantracking, and how to get the most out of a mil dot reticle.

A sniper strives, for consistent shooting and exploits any edge in weapon or ammo or technique to squeeze out just a hair more accuracy. What distinguishes the sniper is this meticulous application, doing everything— marksmanship, fiddcraft, and tactics slightly better than his foe, which cumulatively yields a decisive edge. The sniper lives on,thrives on this edge. And attitude? He plans a shot with the same professional detachment as a pool ace lining up a cue ball, he shoots technically perfect, without emotion, and analyzes his results.

Since there's no "best" way to do anything, you'll see several techniques for things like wind or range estimation so you can choose the one that best fits your particular situation. I heartily encourage you to experiment, to dare to try the untested and attempt the new.
